Stranger Safety

Safety Tips for School Aged Children
Tips from Child Find Ontario

  • I always check with my parents or caregiver before going anywhere.
  • I travel with a buddy or in a group.
  • I don't go to places that are dark, lonely or scary looking – even on a dare.
  • I only accept gifts or money if my parents say it's OK.
  • I never accept car rides unless I have my parents' permission.
  • I have a secret code word with my parents in case of emergency.
  • If a stranger comes too close, I say "NO", run away and tell an adult I trust.
  • If someone touches me in a way that makes me feel uncomfortable, I say "NO" and tell an adult I trust.
  • I only talk to strangers when I am with my parents or caregiver.
  • If someone is bothering me or I am lost, I go to a public place (like a store) or a house with a Block Parent sign that I can see.
  • If I am home alone, I never tell anyone I'm alone and I don't answer the door.
  • If I am scared or need help, I call 911.
  • If I am in a public place (like a store) and I get separated from my parents, I go to a cashier or security guard and tell them I've lost my mom and dad and need help finding them. I never wander around looking for them, and I don't leave the store.
  • I talk with my parents about using the computer and follow rules for the Internet.
